Instructors:
Subhash Risbud, Department of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science, College of Engineering and Marcie Kirk-Holland, Internship & Career Center

Description: Through the use of standard career assessments students will understand and be able to articulate attributes of their temperament, their values, skills and interests verbally (mock interviews) and in writing (resume and cover letter). An emphasis will be placed on perspectives, skills and experiences that will position students for success in a globalized market. The global nature of the world of work will be explored through activities demonstrating the interconnectedness of today's design, production, distribution and licensing systems. Students will be able to assess the types of positions available in the US and other countries through occupational research using the internet as well as interviews. Students will use decision-making skills to determine goals and objectives for their careers and apply these findings to action plans that they can begin to achieve immediately. Students will learn about campus resources that they can pursue to achieve their career goals.

Format: The seminar will meet for two hours each week. Activities will include discussions, informal lectures, guest speakers, and a class trip to the Fall Career Fair and/or the International Education Week Fair and/or the Study and Intern Abroad Fair. There will be no formal text for this course, however reading materials will be provided by instructor. Grading: Students will be given a P/NP grade based on the quality of several reflective papers (2-3 pages) on class activities (Career Fair 20%, Occupational Research 20%, Writing for career search 25%) and a final paper (5 pages) on their career/life plan 30%.
