Description: This course will cover different offensive and defensive strategies that are used and taught in the game of basketball. The content of the course will also cover how the game of basketball has changed and evolved because of different training techniques and rule changes that have taken place over the years. Students will be encouraged to discuss and come up with new and dynamic concepts and learn how to prepare scouting reports on players and teams, how to analyze video tape and how to deliver information to a team. The goal of the seminar is to expose students to different ideas and concepts in the game of basketball. It will serve to educate future basketball coaches or to further educate current fans of the game. Guest speakers will be part of the educational process and additionally class experiences will include viewing facilities, training equipment, and seeing different strategies put into effect by watching live demonstrations.
Format: The seminar will meet for two hours each week for ten weeks. The time will be split between lecture, guest speakers, video and student presentations. Reading and video material will be provided. There is no text for the course. There will be outside assignments given periodically through out the quarter. Grading: This will be a 2-unit pass, no pass class. The class will be required to do writing projects as well as oral presentations on different strategies of the game. The class will be set up where the students are encouraged to participate and have open dialogue and discussions.
About the Instructors: Greg Clink who is full time coach/instructor in the Department of Physical Education has taught this course previously (2007 Spring Quarter). John Lamanna who is a part time men’s basketball coach will be co-instructing this course. With the course’s topic discussing the strategic aspect of the sport of basketball it is fitting to have basketball coaches who have an expertise in the area to teach the course, especially with Greg Clink already have taught the course one time previously.
