Introduction to Highway Engineering
Instructors: John Harvey and David Jones, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering
Description: The course will provide participants with an introduction to highway engineering and includes topics such as geometric design, pavement design, drainage, materials, construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, and asset management. All levels of road from gravel to multi-lane freeways, as well as airfield pavements, will be covered. The environmental implications associated with highway networks will form an integral part of the seminar. UC Davis is the only UC Campus that offers instruction in Pavement Engineering. There is currently a shortage of pavement engineers in California specifically and the USA in general, but also a growing need for this expertise as the nation's highways reach the end of their design lives and require major rehabilitation with minimal environmental and user impact. The seminar aims to introduce pavement engineering to civil and environmental engineering and other interested students, either as a background, or to encourage further study in the subject.
Format: Students will be provided with a list of suggested readings, but will be expected to supplement this with additional information gathered through additional readings. Students will be required to prepare topics for group discussion during each session. Grading: Grades will be based on group participation (20 percent), weekly assignments (40 percent) and an essay (40 percent)
