Sports Injuries: Facts, Myths & Unanswered Questions

Instructor: Lisa Varnum, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, College of Letters and Science

Description: The subject of sports injuries will be viewed from various aspects including gender differences, surface and conditioning issues, and age variances that contribute to the quantity and severity of the injury.  The course will explore the variety, recognition and touch briefly on the treatment of athletic injuries in a lecture and discussion format.

Format: The seminar will meet for one hour each week.  Reading material (in the form of a selected reference book), lecture will create a solid foundation for discussions in sports medicine. The course will be a P/NP course.  The course will have four papers responding to specific questions based on the daily presentations. Grading: The grade will be based on quality of written work, as well as frequency and quality of participation in class discussions.  40% participation, 60% for 4 response papers.

About the Instructor: Lisa Varnum has been a certified athletic trainer at UC Davis since 1989.  She works with the Intercollegiate Athletic teams on campus, and also teaches an academic course in sports medicine within the Physical Education department.  Other staff athletic trainers, physical therapists, and team physicians will join her in teaching the seminar.
