Games and Strategic Behavior
Instructor: Giacomo Bonanno, Department of Economics, College of Letters and Sciences
Description: The subject matter addresses the theory of games and strategic behavior. We will explore applications of game theory in different areas, in particular economics and political science. The basics of both non-cooperative and cooperative game theory will be covered. Information will be presented through informal lectures, readings, and discussion.
Format: The seminar will meet for one hour each week. The time will be divided between informal lecture presentations, discussion, and student presentations. Before each meeting students will be expected to read parts of the book Thinking strategically, by Avinash Dixit and Barry Nalebuff (W. W. Norton). Students will be required to read parts of the textbook before each meeting and to participate actively in class discussions. The students will be divided in five groups of four students each and each group will be expected to turn in assigned homework every week. The groups will take turns explaining their answers to the rest of the class. Grading: The course grade will be based on the quality of the homework (1/2), on the ability to explain answers to the rest of the class (1/4) and on the frequency and quality of their participation in class discussion (1/4).
