Description: Weekly discussion of artistic and ethical issues of intellectual/artistic property and publication; weekly discussion of music and music-related decorative art and fashion; collaborative preparation of projects and weekly critique of peer progress; participation in the Freshman Self-Publishing Seminar’s Showcase (see Format, below). Development of awareness of artists’ rights and principles of contracting and licensing; actual experience in evaluating a musical event or comparable exhibition or live appearance; actual experience in artistic and business collaboration; actual experience in the registry of a U.S. copyright; actual experience in exhibition (“showcasing”) and sales.

Format: Regular seminar meetings will be held R 9/30 through R 11/4, 3:35–5:00 p.m., in 203 Music. The instructor will be available in 203 Music from 3:00–3:35 p.m. on those days for individual or group consultation. (Other meeting times may be arranged, and dialogue via email is encouraged.) The final meetings will be held in the MU Gallery from 4:10–5:00 on R 11/4 and 3:10–5:00 on R 11/18. Total: 10 contact hours. Each student will be required to attend one musical event or art/design exhibition of her/his own choosing. On collaborative projects, students are required to meet with their peer collaborators and document in journal. Grading:

The required text is Volker Gebhardt, The History of Art, Barron’s “Crash Course Series,” approx. $15.00. Total seminar cost to student: $60.00 or under.
