What is Mental Illness?
Instructor: Enrique Ochoa, Department of Psychiatry and
Behavioral Sciences,
School of Medicine
Description: This Introductory Course will educate students on
Mental Illness. It will consider the work Psychiatrists perform in
diverse Clinical
settings and it will discuss how Clinical Psychiatry interfaces with
Basic Science
and Neuroscience Research. The main goals for this course are: a)
Raising awareness
on the stigma that society usually imposes on mentally ill people; b) Sharing
student’s own experiences with mentally ill people; c) Discussing some of
the most important Psychiatric Disorders; d) Educating on the emerging field of
Neuropsychiatry.
Format: There will be one hour a week of formal presentations
and discussions. Selected films portraying people with mental illness will be
discussed with the participants. Grading: 50%
of grading
based on student participation in class; 50% based on oral presentations by the
students themselves.
