American Image Around the World
Instructor: Krishnan Nambiar, Department of Chemistry, College of Letters
& Science
Description: In this seminar we will explore the issues that
shape the American image abroad. We will look at the effects of what we do on
the lives of others around the world and how it shapes their opinion of us. We
will examine various aspects such as culture, economics, religion, politics, role
of media, entertainment, globalization, etc.
Format: The seminar will meet for two hours each week. We will
review available documentaries and discuss current and relevant articles on the
topic. The seminar will involve active participation from students who will research
the topic and make in-class presentations. There will be no textbook for the course.
Grading: Students will be required to prepare a short
paper (2-4 pages) on a topic agreed up on through class discussion and consultation
with the instructor. The course grade will be based on the quality of thr written
paper (1/3rd), oral presentations (1/3rd) and on the frequency and quality of
their participation in class discussions (1/3rd).
About the Instructor: Professor Krishnan Nambiar is a member
of the faculty in the Department of Chemistry and also teaches in Davis Honors
Challenge. His scientific research interests include the design and synthesis
of molecules to control gene expression relevant to cancer and prevent the fusion
of viruses with human cells as in AIDS. His general interests include international
relations and world peace.
