An Experiential Guide to Hiking Around Davis
Instructor: Hemant Bhargava, Graduate School of Management
Description: The course will involve 3-5 fields
trips to hiking
destinations within 1-hour of Davis. One group of students will be assigned
as trip-leaders for each trip. Prior to the trip, this group will
research and
provide general information related to the destination. All other
students will
contribute information specific to their area of expertise (e.g.,
geology, flora-fauna,
history). Following the trip, students will prepare a multi-media
report, intended
to serve as a guide for the destination, covering aspects including location,
topography, history, plant and animal life, sights etc. All reports will be
placed on a web site, available for future access. The course will
develop
- knowledge of local community
- information research skills
- writing, organizing, and presentation skills
- web development skills
- reporting and leadership skills
Format: A planning meeting will be scheduled
(tentative: April
7, 4 pm, AOB IV). After that the course will meet once in 2 weeks, for a 2-hr
field trip. Possible locations to be discussed with students,
include Mt. Diablo,
Cache Creek, Lake Berryessa, Auburn. A final meeting will be held
in the first
week of June. Other activities will include research, organization,
report-writing,
and website development as explained in description.
Grading:
Grading will be based on: the multi-media report: content (20%); layout and
presentation (20%); web implementation (20%); trip-leadership and
guidance (20%)
and trip-discussion and contribution of information (20%).
About the Instructor: Professor Hemant Bhargava has been at
UC Davis since July 2003. He has held faculty positions at Penn
State University
(2000-2003) and the Naval Postgraduate School (1989-2000). His research is in
information technologies and decision science, and he has published dozens of
articles in several leading journals and conferences.
