Taking Care of Hospitalized Patients: A Glimpse Into Medical Care After the ER

Instructor:
Raminder Gill, Department of Pulmonary & Critical Medicine, School of Medicine

Description: Currently much attention is given to medical care received in the emergency room with popular programs such as ER and Scrubs on television. If you have ever wondered what goes on after the patient leaves the ER, this is the learning opportunity for you. My job is to care for adult patients admitted to UC Davis Medical Center. Some sessions will consist of brief lectures pertaining to a focused topic such as: heart attack, pneumonia, or kidney failure. After that we will discuss your thoughts and feelings on that particular disease process. Other days, we will watch portions of medicine related television programs and discuss what the students interpretation of the events is along with my perspective. One session will be devoted to a field trip to UC Davis Medical Center to get a glimpse of what it is I do and what we have been discussing in the course. Not only do I want you to learn about my profession, I also want you to gain an understanding of the current issues surrounding health care and the ability to deliver quality care. Goals: To educate the student about basic hospital medicine, To stimulate their awareness of the current health care crisis, To educate them to become more informed health care consumers. This is intended to be an interactive and reflective experience for the student.

Format: The schedule will consist of 9 sessions at the UC Davis campus and 1 field trip to UC Davis Medical Center. Brief reading pertinent to the topic of discussion beginning with the second session. Watching one television program such as ER, Scrubs, or House, then reflecting upon what you saw in a one to two page paper. Grading: regular attendance and participation in discussions. Completion of the short paper regarding your experience watching a medical program on TV. Attendance for the field trip is encouraged but optional as UC Davis Medical Center is so far from campus. Students will pass with completion of the paper and attendance/participation for 70% of the sessions.
