Bond, James Bond: The 007 Phenomenon
Instructor: Leslie Lyons, Department of Population, Heath
and Reproduction,
School of Veterinary Medicine
Description: For the past 50 years, the Ian
Fleming’s secret
agent character, James Bond, has entertained movie goer’s through-out the
world. The wealth of films covering several generations allows an examination
in the changes in culture, style, technology, and the role of women in society.
This course will examine various aspects that transcend the Bond
films, relating
the film topics, gadgets and characters to the modern society and
current events.
Information will be presented through informal lectures, readings, film viewing
and discussion.
Format: The seminar will meet for two hours each
week. The time
will be divided between informal lecture presentations, discussion,
film viewing,
and student presentations. Reading material and films will be provided. There
is no text for the course. Students will be assigned a topic that
will be presented
and discussed at one of the class sessions. Students will be required to view
three Bond films from different generations to develop their
presentation on how
the topic has evolved over the past 50 years. Grading:
Students will be required to prepare a short paper on one of the
aspects of James
Bond films that have evolved during the span of the films. The course
grade will
be based on the quality of their written paper -- 5 to 7 pages (1/3) and oral
presentations (1/3) and on the frequency and quality of their participation in
class discussion (1/3).
