Instructor: Anne Smith, Department of Anesthesiology, School
of Medicine
Description: The subject matter gives a broad overview of the
neurobiology of sleep, including the stages of sleep, sleep disorders
and theories
behind the function of sleep. We will also discuss how sleep is
related to circadian
rhythms, and how it differs from anesthesia. Information will be
presented through
informal lectures, readings, and discussion.
Format: The seminar will meet for 1 hour each week. The time
will be divided between informal lecture presentations, discussion of reading
assignments, and student presentations. Reading material will be
provided. Students
will be required to prepare a short paper (4-5 pages) on a topic to be chosen
in consultation with the instructor and prepare a 5-10 minute presentation of
the final paper for the class. The topic may be selected from a broad range of
themes, including course-related material, psychology, or art and literature.
Grading: The course grade will be based on the written
paper (50%); class participation (20%) and presentation of final
paper (30%).
