Disruptive Technologies
Instructor: John Bruno, Vice Provost Information & Educational Technology
Description: In this seminar we will investigate a new theory of why seemingly successful businesses fail. The theory is based on a notion of "disruptive technologies," introduced by Professor Clayton M. Christensen in his PhD dissertation. Examples of this phenomenon arise in many sectors of the economy including information technology, retail businesses, manufacturing, and education.
Format: The instructor will introduce the topic and the underlying theory. The students will be asked to investigate a particular industry for examples of a "disruptive technology" and be prepared to provide both an oral and written report. In addition to historical examples, the class will investigate the predictive possibilities of this theory. The textbook: The Innovator's Dilemma, by Clayton M. Christensen Grading: The grade will be based on the students participation in the seminar and the oral and written report.
