Geometry and Computers
Instructor: Jesus DeLoera, Department of Mathematics, College of Letters and Science
Description: The purpose of this course is to explore how computers have created a revolution in one of the oldest areas of Mathematics: Geometry. With the help of computers not only new knowledge is being discovered, but sometimes even computers can generate rigorous proofs. Information will be presented through informal lectures, readings, laboratory demonstrations and discussion.
Format: The time will be divided between informal lecture presentations, discussion, and student presentations. Reading material will be provided. There is no text for the course. Students will be required to prepare a short online paper, a web page, on a topic to be chosen in consultation with the instructor. Grading: The course grade will be based on the quality of their written (1/3) and oral (1/3) presentations and on the frequency and quality of their participation in class discussion (1/3). The students will have to learn HTML language to display their work.
About the Instructor: Professor Jesus A. De Loera is a member of the faculty in the Department of Mathematics and a member of the Graduate Group in Computer Science. His research interests include Combinatorial mathematics and Mathematics in computation. He is a co-organizer of the special year in computational geometry at the Mathematical Science Institute at Berkeley.
