Global Capitalism

Description: Global capitalism will be examined as a force for change and progress accompanied by significant transitional impacts on regional societies and nations. The seminar will look at globalization and examine what it means for the sense of community, the hold on tradition and the future prosperity of nations. The seminar is based on reading and discussing the insightful book Against the Dead Hand: The Uncertain Struggle for Global Capitalism. The students will engage in a study of the benefits and impacts of globalization and formulate a considered position on the consequences and benefits of rapid global change.
Textbook: Against the Dead Hand by Brink Lindsey
Format: Each student will prepare and present a one-page thesis on an issue of interest emerging from the book or discussion. At the end of the class, a 5 page paper on the chosen topic will be submitted for grading. Grading: The grade will be set on participation in the class discussion (40%); the one page thesis summary and presentation (30%), and the final paper (30%).
