The Role of Negotiation in Leadership

Instructor:
Peter Rock, Department of Chemistry, College of Letters and Science

Description: This course is designed to enhance both the negotiation and leadership skills of the participants. Effective negotiation is a critical component of effective leadership. The instructor will use the assigned readings (see below), in conjunction with his leadership and negotiation experience acquired during his 39-year tenure as an administrator and faculty member at UC Davis to facilitate the learning process for the students. The general plan and format of instruction will involve presentation of concepts and principles of leadership and negotiation by the instructor designed to elicit extensive intellectual interaction with the students, which draw on their personal experience. The key texts to be employed in the course are as follows:

1) "The Contrarian's Guide to Leadership" by Steven B. Sample, President University of Southern California. Jossey-Bass (John Wiley) 2002.

2) "Getting to Yes" (Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In) 2nd Ed. By Roger Fisher and William Ury, with Bruce Patton of the Harvard Negotiation Project, Penguin Books 1991.

3) "The Leadership Secrets of Colin Powell" by Oren Harari, McGraw-Hill 2002.

Format: Class meetings will involve brief concept presentations (15-20 mins) by the instructor based on the reading assignments, followed by discussions with the students. Guest participants will be used to provide a varied and balanced perspective. The course will meet weekly during the quarter. Students will be expected to be active discussion participants in the class. Grading: Their grades will be based 60% on class participation and 40% on a 3-4 page paper describing their view of the essentials of effective leadership with an emphasis on negotiation skills. Students will be encouraged (but not required) to base their paper on an interview with a person in a leadership position.
