Sports and Cultures in Global and Local Societies

Description: Seminar topics address the interrelationships of sport and contemporary cultures. The seminar will examine the interrelationship of sport with a societys politics, economics, religion, gender and race. The Olympics will be a specific focus of these topics in American culture (local) and the cultures of other countries (global). Information will be examined through lectures, readings, and discussion.
Format: The seminar will meet for two hours each week for eight weeks. The time will be a balance of lecture, discussion, presentations, and short papers. Reading material will be provided. There is no text for the course Grading: Students will be required to prepare and present a short paper on a topic of interest to the student and approved by the instructor. Students will be assigned a letter grade based on the quality of the paper (60%), the quality of the oral presentation (30%), and the frequency and quality of participation in class discussion based on the assigned readings (10%).
About the Instructors: Sue Williams is a member of the faculty of Physical Education and is Director of the Physical Education Program. She is also the head coach of mens and womens cross country at UC Davis and has worked with college teams in national competition and United States teams in international competition. She teaches several courses in the Physical Education Program, with a focus on preparation of teachers.
Pam Gill-Fisher is also a member of the Physical Education Faculty and is also an Associate Director of Athletics as well as the Senior Womens Administrator. Her primary area of specialty is in gender equity issues and sport sociology. She currently teaches a course in Sport and American Society at UC Davis.
