Instructor:
Moradewun Adejunmobi, Department of African American & African Studies, College of Letters and Science

Description: Professor Adejunmobi will lead a discussion session on academic motivation and persistence while guest lecturers will present topics ranging from racial and social identity development and performance enhancement to the leadership skills needed for academic success, writing and research skids, preparation for graduate school and internship and career information. All sessions will include a special focus on the experiences of African American students in a major research university. Upon completion of course requirements students will earn two units of credit towards graduation.
Each session will include presentations by the following specialty programs:
• McNair Scholars Program
• Graduate Study/MURALS
• Washington Center Program
• Education Abroad Program
• Leadership Opportunities
We intend to offer the following:
• The creation of a supportive environment where the student is considered a valuable resource
• A proactive environment that will empower students to express themselves more confidently, especially in the classroom
• A challenging environment where all students are expected to excel
• Avenues through which students can develop themselves as individuals in an academic setting,
• An outlet to express concerns and feelings students may have, and
• A 'safety net' for students who may feel a lack of support at a large research university.

Format: The seminar will meet for one hour and 20 minutes each Monday at noon. Each session will include lecture presentations, film documentaries, a discussion of the topic for the day and relevant reading assignments. One outside evening group activity will be included. There is no text for the course. Grading: Students will prepare a short 3-5 page paper on a topic to be chosen in consultation with the coordinators. The course grade will be based on the relevance of the written assignment and discussion participation.
