Obesity, Diabetes and Heart Disease
Instructor: Lorena Garcia, Department of Chicana/o Studies, College of
Letters and Science
Description: A disproportionate number of US Latinos compared
to White non-Latinos suffer from obesity, a major risk factor for
several chronic
health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. This course
will introduce
students to the epidemiology of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. By the end
of this course, students will be able to 1) define and better
understand obesity,
diabetes and heart disease, 2) identify differences in obesity,
diabetes and heart
disease among Latinos, and 3) recognize key factors that may be
useful for public
health prevention and intervention efforts in obesity, diabetes and
heart disease
among Latinos.
Format: The seminar will meet for 2.5 hours each
week for eight
weeks. The class will be divided between informal lectures, open
discussions and
student oral presentations. There is no textbook required in the
seminar. Students
will be required to present a short paper, the topic will be chosen
in consultation
with the instructor. Grading: The course grade will be
based on a short paper (Final) (5-7 pages, 50%), oral presentation (40%), and
class participation (10%).
About the Instructor: Professor Garcia is an
epidemiologist and
a new faculty member in Chicana/o Studies. Her research interests
include epidemiologic
studies on Latino health, injury and violence prevention, and
acculturation. Current
research projects include HIV risk among high-risk populations,
US-Mexico border
health and health care utilization/access.
