The Writing on the Wall
Instructor: Kathleen Ward, Department of Linguistics,
College of Letters
and Science
Description: This seminar will consider writing systems: their
origin and history, the kinds of writing systems that exist, the
problems of decipherment,
and the relationship of writing systems to literacy and history.
Readings: Readings will be taken from a number of sources, including
several from
The Story of Writing.
Format: The course will be emphasize discussions of
the readings.
Grading: One-half of the grade will be assigned on the
basis of the report (approximately 2-4 pages) done by each student on
a non-Roman
writing system, and one-half will be on participation and attendance.
About the Instructor: Kathleen M. Ward has been a lecturer at
UC Davis for about 18 years. She teaches courses in English grammar, American
dialects and language variation in America, along the introductory courses. Her
interests include language and education and social factors in language.
