Life of the Masses in Victorian London
Instructor: Jonathan Widdicombe, Department of Human
Physiology, School
of Medicine
Description: The course will describe how the poor
lived in Victorian
London, with an emphasis on quotes and illustrations from Victorian
sources.
Format: The seminar will meet for an hour each
week for ten weeks. Half the seminars
will be informal overviews of the various topics (Birth &
Childhood,
Sex, Living Conditions, Working Conditions & Death) by the instructor. The
rest will consist of student presentations of relevant
contemporary articles
(provided by the instructor). Grading: Students will
be
expected to write a short paper on a topic of interest approved by
the instructor.
The course grade will be based on papers (1/3), oral presentations
(1/3) and classroom
participation (1/3).
About the Instructor: Dr. Widdicombe is a Professor of Human
Physiology. He was born in London and educated in the UK. He visits
London yearly
