Women’s Sports and the Media

Description: Seminar topics will address the representation of women’s athletics in current day media. Different types of media will be explored with the emphasis being on each ones depiction of women’s sports. Discussions of the role of media in society and how it may impact a young woman will be examined. Information will be presented through informal lectures, readings, films, and discussions. Students should leave the lecture having a better understanding of the impact of media on society and how its representation of women’s sports affects young women. Students should also leave the course with proficiency in writing a research paper.

Format: The seminar will meet for one hour each week. The seminar will include lecture, discussion, presentation, and short papers. A reader will be required for the course. Students will be required to prepare and present a short paper on a topic of interest to the student within the range of topics discussed in the seminar. Students will work on the paper independently and will present their topic in a small group. Grading: Students will be assigned a grade based on the quality of the paper (50%), the quality of the oral presentation (35%), and participation in class discussions based on the assigned readings (15%).

About the Instructor: Carissa Adams, Ph.D. is a member of the faculty in the department of Physical Education and is also the assistant women’s rowing coach. She is currently completing her second year at UC Davis. During her stay at UC Davis, Dr. Adams has participated in the NCAA National Championship rowing regatta. She teaches several Physical Education classes and has been a guest lecturer in a Physical Education lecture course. Dr. Adams’ Ph.D. in Biology was attained at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Prior to arriving at UC Davis she taught biology lecture and laboratory courses and coached rowing at various universities.
