Instructor: Gary Ford, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering
Description: This seminar will actively engage students in discovering opportunities for engineering students to study abroad. Working with faculty and advisers from the College of Engineering and staff from the Education Abroad Program, students will explore the issues that face engineering students who want to study abroad. The seminar will introduce students to an inventory of resources for students considering study abroad. The final project will be the development of an engineering academic plan that includes a study abroad experience. The goal of this seminar is to dispel the myth that the engineering curriculum makes an education abroad experience unrealistic for engineering students.
Format: Engineering students will meet once a week in the Engineering theme residence hall in Tercero and prepare information for class presentation on a weekly basis. Students will identify international institutions that offer engineering coursework that will articulate to the UC Davis curriculum and prepare an academic plan that includes a study abroad experience. Grading: The grade will be determined by student participation and the quality of the final academic plan that is submitted.
About the Instructor: Professor Ford is a member of the faculty in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is serving currently as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Engineering. His research involves signal and image processing and pattern recognition. Current projects include the development of algorithms to detect low-level image features, such as corners. As a member of the faculty for over 30 years, he has taught over 20 courses, from freshman engineering problem solving and graduate image processing.
